Reminiscent of what Firefox has done to the browser, Red Hat announced today its line-up of virtualization technologies, which is set to make a commodity of virtualization.  It is worth the time to watch the short video from two of its executives:

Red Hat’s Virtualization Strategy

A key quote from the short video:

“Fundamentally… a different approach to virtualization than VMWare.. Red Hat’s model is different… as part of that we plan to free the virtualization layer, and by freeing the virtualization layer we will allow the virtualization layer to be ubiquitous and become part of every core platform that ships, irrespective of whether they are using Red Hat’s management solutions... We are going to be the catalyst that drives virtualization”

Red Hat has always been good about making all of its systems available as Free and Open Source Software.  This unsurprising but welcome announcement is a sign of things to come.  Best of breed VDI (Desktop Virtualization) via the SPICE protocol (I saw a demo playing a DVD over a remote desktop with multiple displays), powerful virtualization hyper-visor via Linux + KVM, and Enterprise management capabilities via ovirt.

Are you spending thousands on proprietary, no-freedom, closed source solutions?  Could there be a more critical component to your IT infrastructure that your Virtual layer?
